The following genealogists offer lectures and classes on a variety of genealogy and family history topics. They are independent contracts

MGS offers this listing as a service to genealogical speakers and instructors and to genealogy and civic organizations who may wish to engage a speaker or instructor. Biographical information is provided by the speakers subject to space limits determined by MGS. Contact individual speakers for additional information about offerings and fees. If you do not see the topic you are looking for, a speaker may be willing to develop a new lecture to fit your needs.

All arrangements are the responsibility of speaker and the organization engaging him or her. MGS does not endorse speakers on this list. Organizations engaging speakers are responsible for checking credentials and references. Speakers who wish to be included on this page are invited to send their request to the MGS Education Committee. Submissions should include 1) a biographical summary of 100 words or less, 2) contact information, including phone, postal or email address, and/or website, and 3) a list of no more than 25 lecture topics.



Rick Crume is a contributing editor for Family Tree Magazine. He has also written for Family Chronicle, Internet Genealogy, Discovering Family History and the National Genealogical Society's NewsMagazine, as well as genealogical journals in Canada and Great Britain. The author of Plugging IntoYour Past: How to Find Real Family History Records Online, he specializes in online research, genealogy software and British genealogy. Since he began researching his family history at age 14, Rick has traced his ancestry back to the 1600s and earlier in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands. J. H. (Jay) Fonkert, CGSM, is a professional genealogy educator, researcher and writer specializing in Midwest and Dutch research, migration and research methods. He is president of the Minnesota Genealogical Society and a Director of the Association of Professional Genealogists. He enjoys teaching both beginning and advanced classes focusing on genealogical problem-solving. Speaking engagements have taken him beyond Minnesota to Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky, Ontario and at the NGS 2010 Conference. Harold E. Hinds, Jr., Ph D, is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Minnesota-Morris, where he teaches a wide variety of history courses, including genealogy and family history. He has lectured widely on genealogical topics, around MN, at both NGS and FGS national conventions, and in NY, OH, OR, SD, TX, and WA. To date (2010) he's author or editor of some 40 books and edited collections. He serves as Director of NGS, Contributing Editor of the Minnesota Genealogist, and columnist for NGS Magazine. Darlene C. Joyce, MA, CGSM, is a certified genealogist. Darlene has served as a Director of the Minnesota Genealogical Society (MGS) and the Association of Professional Genealogists. She currently chairs the MGS Cemetery Project. Darlene's special research interests include New England research, and 19th century migration through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio Indiana Illinois and the Midwest. Lois Abromitis Mackin has researched Polish, Lithuanian, English, German, Irish, and Scots ancestors in the Midwest, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut for more than ten years. Her education includes a doctorate in history from Brown University; she has also completed the Advanced Methodology and Evidence Analysis course at the Samford University Institute for Genealogical and Historical Research. Tom Rice, CGSM is a full time professional genealogy researcher, lecturer and writer. He is a director of the Irish Genealogical Society International, Inc. and Managing Editor of its quarterly, The Septs; and a past director of the Minnesota Genealogical Society. He has participated in 7 week long workshops at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research and the Salt Lake City Institute of Genealogy. Joanne M. Sher is a professional genealogist and historical researcher, specializing in Northeast Minnesota, Northwest Wisconsin, World War I-era and Jewish genealogy. She has spoken at international, regional, state and local genealogy conferences, as well as taught genealogy classes. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, Genealogical Speakers Guild and numerous national and state genealogical societies.
