Library Summary and Research Policy

Thank you for contacting the Minnesota Genealogical Society. We are pleased to offer service for research in our library. Our fee for one hour of research is $20, with one hour minimum. The fee must be received prior to research being done. We will bill for additional research time, photocopies at 30 cents per page and additional postage.

If you have questions about our research policy, you can contact the MGS Research Committee at research@mngs.org.

Refer to the list below for a description of materials. Please provide context about the people whose information you are seeking, to the extent you know them: locations in MN, dates and names, and origins.

Submit a check or money order made payable to: Minnesota Genealogical Society and include your e-mail address (if you have one). If you are seeking copies of documents (e.g., family history or obituaries), please enclose a business sized, self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) for a response.

A brief description of some of the materials in the MGS library collection, and estimated time to search them.:
1. Minnesota Censuses: 1850, 1880 and 1900; Polk County: 1885 (unindexed) Time: depends on request.
2. Minnesota Census Indexes: 1870 Time: 1/2 hour
3. City Directories: Note: not all issues available at our library. If you don't find the issue listed here, try the Minnesota Historical Society's Library Catalog at www.mnhs.org. Time: 1/2 hour to check two issues.
     a. Duluth....................................1931--1957, 1970
     b. Hopkins.................................1941--1960
     c. Minneapolis............................1873--1987
     d. St. Paul..................................1876--1999
     e. Rochester / Olmsted Co........1913--1991
     f. Fargo / Moorhead...................1961--1991
4. Obituaries: Minneapolis: 1988-1997; St. Paul 1991-1997; Anoka 1990; Burnsville: 1988-1991; Long Lake: 1992-1999; Nicollet Co. 1998; Pipestone Co. 1980's-2000; Prairie Island 1923-1983; Stillwater 1987-1988; St. Anthony: 1989-1994; Worthington 1998-2000 Additional years available for some communities. Time: 1/4 hour per file.
5. Minnesota Civil War rosters: Index for.Minnesota in the Civil and Indian Wars, 1861-1865 Time: 1/4 hour.
6. Catholic Church Records for some of the churches within the Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis. A few select films are available, and our collection is increasing. Please see our website to see which films are available.

7. Minnesota County histories
8. Surname files and general county cemetery information. Time: 1/2 hour
9. Wide variety of genealogical information concerning other states. Time: 1/2 hour if indexed, 1 hour unindexed.
10.  Family history collection.

Please note:
• The Minnesota Genealogical Society does not participate in the Inter-Library Loan program. Our collection does not circulate and is available for research only at our library.
• For a list of independent researchers, please send a SASE to MGS at the address found above. MGS does not endorse, nor is it responsible for their research services.
• The Minnesota Genealogical Society does not have vital records, (birth, death or marriage) or censuses other than those listed above, and we do not have Naturalization records. Minnesota vital records information may be obtained by contacting the county where the vital record was created. Most death certificates, some birth certificates and many Naturalization records are on film at the Minnesota Historical Society, 345 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102-1906, or www.mnhs.org. You can order records through their website for a fee.
