Cemetery Information
PROJECT UPDATE: A team of 54 volunteers have completed work on 66 of the 87 counties in Minnesota. This is a 76% completion rate. [The list of 21 counties still needing more work is shown below. If you can help, let us know!] Our data on cemetery locations is being added to the MGS website [www.mngs.org] as quickly as possible. Watch for additions! Notice that we have tried to collect information on Twp/Range/Section, longitude/latitude, driving directions, sexton info, etc. Send corrections to the project coordinator! Also watch for publication of the Bibliography of Minnesota Burial Transcriptions: A Finding Aid, which is pending. Special recognition goes to Marcia Paulson [who did the work on 9 counties], and to Cecelia McKeig [who completed 8 counties], and also to Gay McClellan, who did the checking of the final Excel files for all counties. A HUGE "Thank You" to all who helped! This is a labor of love, and would not be possible without the contributions of many. A list of county volunteers and their contact info is available from the coordinator, Darlene Joyce. Send an email request to: dcjoyce [at] comcast.net; be sure to identify yourself, and the information you need. Counties that Still Need Work: Benton, Carlton, Chippewa, Dakota, Douglas, Faribault, Goodhue, Kandiyohi, Mille Lacs, Nicollet, Norman, Redwood, Renville, Roseau, Sherburne, St. Louis, Stearns, Stevens, Wabasha, and Winona Counties. If you can share information, it will be appreciated! A great deal of information exists on these counties, but it is still incomplete. Can you help us complete the master list of cemetery locations? [Check out one of the completed counties for our template.] A word to county societies: Please let us know if you have/sell burial transcriptions. We want to be sure to add you to the bibliography of sources, so researchers can find you! WHICH Cemeteries Have Never Been Transcribed? MGS gets this question a lot. We are working to merge county-by-county data into a fully-searchable database. This will help us answer questions of this kind. Stay tuned! Introduction to the MGS Cemetery Inventory |
