1185 Concord St. N. Suite 218 South St. Paul, MN 55075-1187 (651) 455-9057 mngs.org |
How the information was compiled: A survey form was mailed to every courthouse and genealogical or historical society in the State of Minnesota. Each volunteer personally contacted local societies in the county for assistance, and then checked a variety of sources known to contain information on Minnesota cemeteries. These included: maps; the U.S. Geological Survey; Wiley Pope's "Cemeteries in Print"; the old MGS Cemetery Notebooks; WPA Survey of Minnesota cemeteries; the "Dalby Burial Files"; the "Kirchner Burial Files"; the 2001 Mortuary Science survey, compiled by the State of MN; cemetery transcriptions published in the Minnesota Genealogist; a search of the Internet; church, county and town histories; and local directories, if available. Volunteers checked card catalogs at MGS, the Family History Library; and the Minnesota Historical Society. Many volunteers also visited their county, and the cemeteries in their county, and contacted area churches, funeral homes, local societies and the county courthouse. Each volunteer used unique methods to communicate with others, and they encountered various responses. Accordingly, the results county-to-county may vary. The date of completion for each county also varies. Some were completed as early as 2001, but most have been completed in 2005 and 2006.

| Notes Cemetery named for John Atkinson (1805-1892) who acquired land in the 1840's and built a home by Old Territorial Road between Pt Douglas and St Paul. Cemetery started in 1860's as a family graveyard and gradually became a community burial ground for families in the area. An association was charted in 1874 but was non existent in the early 1900's. The last burial was in 1907. The cemetery was regraded by the Lion's Club and the city took over ownership in 1980. Broken tombstones were set in concrete horizontally in the shade of a maple tree in the center of the cemetery. There are approximately 50 burials with 26 tombstones. The cemetery is in an unique setting, between McDonald's and Tires Plus. A bronze marker with the cemetery name was installed in 1982 by the Washington County Historical Society. | ||||||||||||

Driving Directions From St. Paul take Hwy 94 east to Manning Ave (Hwy 95); exit right onto Manning, then left onto frontage (Old Hudson Road). Travel east to Indian Trail and to cemetery. Cemetery is located at Fahlstrom Preserve.
| Notes Cemetery named for Jacob Fahlstrom who converted to Methodism in 1837 and for his work as a missionary to Indians and as a lay preacher to white settlers. There are about a dozen graves. The location of the graves is undisclosed but there are several markers made in granite, metal, and concrete. A memorial marker on the graves of Jacob and Margaret Fahlstrom was dedicated by the Historical Society of the MN Conference of Methodist Church in 1964. In 1997 the Fahlstrom land was sold for the development of homes. The developer cleared underbrush and improved the cemetery by installing crushed rock paths and a wrought iron fence surrounding the markers. | Notes Mount Hope is the oldest cemetery in Afton. It was dedicated the same year the village was platted, 1855. It was officially assigned five acres; land donated by the Haskell and Getchell families but the cemetery never grew beyond one half acre. The first burial was in 1854, the last in 1892. Poor access probably accounts for its discontinued use. Many graves are scattered in a wooded area. Some have large monuments and fences. Until recently, the cemetery could only be reached via a steep winding former wagon trail. The City of Afton who now maintains the cemetery has completed a new driveway and two car parking area and have graveled the trail. Borings done in 2000 by archeology people revealed as many as 60 burials with no markers. There are four Civil War veterans buried in this cemetery. Several community groups have occasionally tried to rescue the cemetery from vandalism and lack of care. See: "Afton Remembered" published 1996, pp 53-54, by Edwin G. Jeremiah Poston was given quit claim deed by Thomas Connally at Stillwater, acting land agent for President Buchanan. For $200.00 Poston bought a quarter section of land. He set aside one acre for a burial plot. At one time the names of those buried there were on old white markers. It included the families of Shiels, Stipes, Simmons, Veith, Poston, Peoples, and Marshes. The cemetery no long exists. See: "Forest Lake Times" dated September 15, 1949. | ||||||||||||

| Notes Exact location differs. John and Elizabeth Erickson, in 1990, stated "Nancy Oldham and her parents were said by Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Paulson to be buried in unmarked graves on the west side of Trading Post Road, one mile south of its junction with Co Rd 18 southwest of Afton". An Afton old timer who has died, remembered the burial plot being on the northwest corner of Trading Post Trail and 50th Street in Afton and that the landowner plowed around it in the middle of the field and trees had grown around the plot. | ||||||||||||

Notes At the turn of the century this was the location of a rest home affiliated with Church of God. Cemetery was for its inmates; many were indigent. Cemetery records lost in 1945. By 1982 all above ground evidence of cemetery had disappeared and most of the ground covered by row crops. Site marked with one large carved granite monument; individual markers have disappeared. During highway construction in 1982, cemetery was resurveyed and fenced. Shallow depressions are only evidence of burials. Cemetery owned by city. Listed in City Register of Historic Sites and Landmarks. Access by means of pedestrian trail; no off-street parking. Bronze marker installed in 1990 by Washington County Historical Society. | Notes The cemetery carries the name given the original Newport settlement in 1843 by John A. Ford. In 1848 John Holton, a Newport pioneer made this land available for the private burials of the families of the area's oldest settlers. Some people associated with the Red Rock Methodist Camp meetings during the 1868 to 1937 period are also buried here. It is less than an acre and has about 33 burials; about 24 are marked with headstones, obelisks, and tablets. Cemetery is situated on steep rising land, making maintenance difficult. The Association dates from 1921 but the burial ground is much older, going back to the 1860's. Early records were destroyed in a house fire in 1921; later records are incomplete. The last interment was in 1982. A brass marker with the cemetery name was installed in 1989 by the Washington County Historical Society.
