Data Limitations:
•  Expect cemeteries of the same name, even within a given township.
•  Because of the "same name" problem, there may be a few instances where it was difficult to match a transcription to the correct cemetery; read the notes fields.
•  Many cemeteries have been moved; we did our best to identify these, and to give the background information in the notes field.
•  Blank fields do exist; we did our best!
•  If you are having trouble, browse the cemetery list for your county and for bordering counties.
•  Longitude/latitude have been estimated.
•  Many cemeteries will not have an exact postal address.
•  Indian mounds are not included in this database; public cemeteries where Native Americans are buried are included.
•  Omissions are inevitable-it was impossible to recapture information on many early burial sites that are no longer visible as cemeteries. If you know a correction or addition, please send this information to MGS!
•  Errors are also impossible to prevent; use this inventory as a finding aid, and confirm the information for your family! Always check original records!

How the information was compiled: A survey form was mailed to every courthouse and genealogical or historical society in the State of Minnesota. Each volunteer personally contacted local societies in the county for assistance, and then checked a variety of sources known to contain information on Minnesota cemeteries. These included: maps; the U.S. Geological Survey; Wiley Pope's "Cemeteries in Print"; the old MGS Cemetery Notebooks; WPA Survey of Minnesota cemeteries; the "Dalby Burial Files"; the "Kirchner Burial Files"; the 2001 Mortuary Science survey, compiled by the State of MN; cemetery transcriptions published in the Minnesota Genealogist; a search of the Internet; church, county and town histories; and local directories, if available. Volunteers checked card catalogs at MGS, the Family History Library; and the Minnesota Historical Society. Many volunteers also visited their county, and the cemeteries in their county, and contacted area churches, funeral homes, local societies and the county courthouse. Each volunteer used unique methods to communicate with others, and they encountered various responses. Accordingly, the results county-to-county may vary. The date of completion for each county also varies. Some were completed as early as 2001, but most have been completed in 2005 and 2006.

First cemetery was located south of present church. Records burned. Land purchased for current cemetery in 1860 and about 15 gravesites were moved to this location. Alexander Faribault, founder of city, buried here. Entry in Rice County History Book states a grass fire burned all of the wooded markers. From an unknown and undated source at Rice County Historical Society, the following is written: "When the Milwaukee railroad was built about 1865, it was routed to run through the bluff in Mendota where Baptist Faribault had a vault containing the bodies of relatives and near relatives. Those bodies had to be removed. That winter sixty teams and sleighs removed the bodies and brought them here, where Alexander had a temporary vault excavated to hold the bodies until spring for burial in ground to be donated for a cemetery known now as Calvary Cemetery. Over eighty bodies are now buried in that plot".

There were over 1200 burials in the East Cemetery; some have been exhumed and buried elsewhere. The goal is to replace the numbered stones with stones that include names and dates. Started in 1999, about ten have been done, some with the financial help of family members. The remainder will be done when funds are available. This is a project of "Remembering with Dignity", a coalition of disability rights groups of which Jim Fassett-Carman is a member.

Established early 1870's by neighbors of the area. Land donated by Henry Siemers and John Everett. For the first 20 years each family cared for their own graves. Funds for taking care of the cemetery began in 1893. Association organized 1897. WPA lists this cemetery as St. John's. German Union no longer listed in GNIS. See St.John's in Forest Twp. USGS number 1562 for St.John's is probably meant for German Union.

From "Lynch Family History", 766-D at Rice County Historical Soc. In part, it reads "Mr. Faribault influenced the Sioux Indians to come to Faribault. All along the west bank of the Straight River from Division to 14th Street , was a picturesque encampment of bark and buffalo skin tepees. Mr. Hulett writes in Rice County records, that when he arrived with his friends, at the brow of the hill below where later stood the old Baron House and now stands the Brunswick Hotel, the setting sun cast a mellow light upon this village of Indians, comprising of some sixty wigwams, stretching along what is now Central Avenue. The present tourist park was an Indian burial ground, bodies of Indians tied in blankets were hung up in trees. There were twenty to thirty of these repulsive objects swaying in the breeze there at one time. (Recorded by an early comer)".
