"Midwest Genealogy Libraries" By Darlene Joyce, CG
Thursday, March 18, 2010, 7 PM (Following the 20 min. Annual Meeting)
Darlene will discuss a wonderful array of genealogy resources in Minnesota and 11 bordering states. We will take a visual tour of some of the major repositories for genealogical and family history research in our region; discuss preparations for an important library visit; learn how to search many key data collections from your home computer; share tips on good ways to stay "current" on the constant changes affecting major genealogy libraries; discuss several ways to take advantage of inter-library loan and online downloading of Midwest data, wherever archived, including WorldCat; NUCMUC; and PERSI. Enjoy a tour Midwest repositories in MN and neighboring states. A substantive handout will be given.

Darlene (Cruikshank) Joyce, a prominent lecturer on genealogy, is a Certified Genealogist, former Director and Vice President of the MN Genealogical Society, and chair of the MGS Cemetery Project.

The Dakota County Genealogical Society invites you to attend their Program Meetings, open to the public at no charge. The presentations will give you tips on studying your family history and digging out information from numerous archival sources. Come and enjoy our lectures at the Dakota County Historical Society, 130 Third Ave. No. in So. St. Paul. Our guest speaker will be JoEllen Haugo, librarian with the Hennepin County Library, has worked with historic resources for many years including the last four with the Minneapolis Central Library Genealogy Collection. Not a genealogist but an enthusiastic cheerleader of genealogy and local history who enjoys discovering new resources to help genealogists. From experience, she knows many of the ways names and locations can be misspelled and also knows some tools to decipher what the correct spelling might be. She will discuss some of the resources available through public libraries and some special resources available at Minneapolis Central. Her topic will be on "Genealogy Research and Resources at Public Libraries."
